Gallery Vault - Hide Pictures encrypts and conceals photos, videos, and other files on a device. Files are inaccessible without a passcode, while the app itself can be hidden from the home screen and application menu, making it invisible to anyone browsing the device.
The app encrypts all files using encryption protocols that prevent unauthorized access. Encrypted files remain on the device and are never synchronized to cloud services or online accounts. This offline-only approach keeps data within the vault, but requires users to back up files before a factory reset or device transfer. Without a backup, files cannot be recovered if the device is wiped.
Gallery Vault relies primarily on passcode authentication, which users establish during initial setup. On Samsung devices with a fingerprint scanner, the app supports fingerprint authentication as an alternative, allowing biometric access to the vault without entering the passcode each time.
Break-in Alerts log unauthorized access attempts to the vault. When someone enters an incorrect passcode, the app records the attempt and immediately alerts the user. This allows users to detect whether someone has tried to open the vault, even unsuccessfully.
The app places no limit on the number or size of media that can be hidden. Users can move encrypted files to an external SD card to free up device storage. This lets them store large video collections or extensive photo libraries in the encrypted vault while preserving internal storage for other apps and media.
Beyond organizing existing media, the app can download images and videos directly from web pages. Users can immediately store web-based content in the encrypted vault without keeping unprotected copies on the device or in download folders.
The app supports GIF images alongside standard photo and video formats. A shake gesture feature immediately closes the app, offering a quick, discreet exit from the vault if the device is in someone else's hands. This method is more subtle than using menus or the back button.
Gallery Vault supports Android 4.4 (KitKat) and later, covering devices released over the past decade. The app is available in 13 languages: English, Russian, Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, German, Vietnamese, Italian, Thai, Arabic, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
The Fake Passcode feature employs security through deception. When an incorrect passcode is entered, the app displays a decoy folder with generic images and videos instead of an error message. Users entering the wrong code see what appears to be a legitimate but unremarkable collection, obscuring the vault's true contents. This approach discourages further attempts and prevents discovery of the vault by casual users.
