AppLock is a security utility that restricts access to apps, photos, and videos through password or pattern-based authentication, protecting sensitive applications and media files from unauthorized access.
The app provides multiple mechanisms for securing content. Users can set passwords using either a PIN code or a pattern lock drawn on a grid. The pattern lock features an invisible mode with random keyboard layout, which changes the positions of unlock points each time the lock screen appears, making it significantly harder to predict or replicate through visual observation. Beyond app protection, AppLock can encrypt the device's gallery and lock photos and videos individually, adding an additional layer of security to media files. The app also prevents unauthorized changes to protected app settings and blocks unintended in-app purchases, protecting against both accidental and deliberate unauthorized transactions. Users can change their passwords at any time through the app's Settings menu.
When someone attempts to unlock a protected app without authorization, AppLock's Intruder Selfie feature captures a photograph of the person making the attempt and records the exact time and date of the unauthorized access. This creates a record of intrusion attempts that users can review later.
Users can configure how frequently the lock activates. The Always Lock setting requires authentication every time a protected app is opened. The 5 minutes option requires re-authentication only if the app is accessed more than five minutes after the last successful unlock. The Until Screen Off setting requires re-authentication only after the device's screen turns off or enters sleep mode. Users can also enable or disable the lock with a single tap, allowing quick temporary deactivation without modifying the underlying lock settings.
AppLock protects diverse categories of applications. Social media and messaging apps can be locked to prevent unauthorized access to conversations and contacts. System applications including Contacts, SMS, Gallery, Videos, and Email can be restricted. Payment applications such as Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and PayPal can be locked to prevent unauthorized financial transactions. Email services, video streaming platforms, and various third-party applications can also be secured through AppLock.
The app includes a customization feature that replaces an app's actual icon with a decoy icon on the home screen. Available decoy options include Alarm Clock, Weather, Calculator, Calendar, or Notepad. This obscures which applications are protected by making them appear as common utilities rather than the actual apps they represent.
To balance security with battery life, AppLock includes a power-saving mode that reduces power consumption by 50 percent. This feature can be toggled on or off depending on the user's priorities and device battery state.
Technically, AppLock requires Accessibility Service permission to monitor and intercept app launch events. It also requires the Draw Over Other Apps permission to display the lock interface above other applications on the screen. Usage Access permission allows the app to track which applications are being opened. The app requires Android 5.0 or later for full functionality.
Password recovery is not available within the app. If a user forgets their password, the only way to regain access is to uninstall and reinstall the application, which resets all lock settings and security data. AppLock is available at no cost.
